Ooh!! Congrats!
I also thought of you this weekend when I got a behind the scenes tour of the Munich State Opera House… unfortunately sans Jonas Kaufmann. 🙂
Behind the scenes tours are the best things! Jonas Kaufmann had to withdraw from several performances recently because of some vocal cords-related problem. Leonora and I are very worried about him. I can’t even imagine the depths of fangirling that would happen if I met Kaufmann 🙂
You are in a Wagner-land, so many good opera houses 🙂
Yup. And a lot of the fact that every small village has its own theater/opera house, is because they are state funded. Wish the US would step up its game!
I know Kaufmann was supposed to perform the night I was there. I’m sure he’ll be fine, but it’s a bummer for people who had been saving for some time to watch his specific performance… I think it’s good to give other singers a chance, though!
I am sure those people were super bummed — I was devastated last year when he cancelled his appearances in the Met, and I didn’t even have the ticket then.
Re: state funding — yes, yes, yes. I think the only way to save commercially unsuccessful arts (opera, ballet, symphony, etc) these days is through state funding. I’ve been to a vocaloid concert — without proper musical education, unamplified music is doomed in fifty years.
